Tossing Tires And Climbing Up Walls: Olunike Adeliyi Trains Military-Style For 'Flashpoint'
by: Lindsay Zier-Vogel Date: 11/22/2012
Oluniké Adeliyi and her character, Leah Kerns, have a lot in common – not only are they both driven and focused, but they both have spent their downtime in Haiti.
“I went down to Haiti after the earthquake to help out with (medical) clinics and to help care for survivors,” Adeliyi says with only four (!!) more “Flashpoint” episodes left. “I think it was a really great choice that they decided to include that detail in the script.”
After Raf left Team One in the first episode of Season 5, Leah returned, and returned as only Leah could – tackling a suspect out of nowhere, taking everyone by surprise. “It reminded everyone what they were getting with Leah Kerns. She’s deeply loyal to the team and is extremely strong mentally and physically,” says Adeliyi.
Adeliyi is thrilled to be back on the “Flashpoint” set and says she loved the storylines that revealed more about the personal lives of the members of Team One – Sam and Jules’ pregnancy, the initial flirtations between Spike and Winnie and Ed’s battle with PTSD.
“All of these puzzles pieces fit together,” she says. “It definitely makes it all so much bigger and so much more invested.”
To keep herself in shape for the show, Adeliyi doesn’t just manage a few push-ups here or there. Oh no, she’s embarked on full-on military-style physical training.
“It’s carrying boxing bags and running with them, and throwing tires and climbing up walls with a rope,” Adeliyi says with a laugh.
“The athleticism of my body helps towards this very physical role. I’m always toned and ready to go.”
The countdown to the “Flashpoint” finale is on. The remaining four episodes of “Flashpoint” air Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on CTV. Full episodes are also available online at CTV.ca.
